Born from an idea of Fernand Leredde, a famous Norman breeder and inspired by the Dublin Horse Show, the Normandie Horse Show was created in 1989. His ambition was to revitalise a competition held at the Château de Canisy near Saint-Lô, by promoting regional breeding and foreign trade.
From the very first edition, Fernand Leredde surrounded himself with strong allies such as Denis de Kergorlay, then owner of the Château de Canisy and mayor of the town, and Jean Rochefort, a famous French theatre and television actor and horseman. A pioneer in France, the Normandie Horse Show quickly became a reference in the equine industry.
In 1990, the year of the horse in the Manche area, the Normandy event took a new turn by organising innovative breeding championships, a foal fair, sporting events (Derby-Marathon) and driving.
Wanting to see even more, the Normandy Horse Show joined forces with the town of Saint-Lô and the Pôle Hippique (then called the Centre de Promotion de l’Élevage) in 1993 to make it its new home.
Over the years, the event has been able to surround itself with the best riders and four-legged champions. Few of the world’s greatest stars have not ridden at least once on the event’s tracks. Numerous world champions (such as Éric Levallois, Reynald Angot, Éric Navet and Gilles Bertran de Balenda), Olympic champions (including Pénélope Leprévost and Philippe Rozier) or renowned horses (such as Diamant de Semilly, Quito de Baussy, Papillon Rouge, First de Launay or Flipper d’Elle) have been competing for victories since 1989.
Each year, the Normandie Horse Show is also associated with numerous partners in order to further boost regional and national breeding. The Normandie Horse Show also joins each year with numerous partners in order to boost regional and national breeding. The Stud-Book Selle Français but also the local organisations promoting the Selle Français, Cob Normand (draft horse from Saint-Lô) and pony breeds organise local or national breeding competitions every year.
Since then, the Normandie Horse Show has continued to innovate by organising international Horseball competitions: demonstrations during the World Equestrian Games in Caen in 2014, as well as the European Championships in 2013 and 2017 and most recently the World Cup in 2022.
Since 2015, the organisation added a new dimension to its high-level sporting events by adding a star to its CSI. It then organised the first edition of its Jumping International 3*. In 2023, the Normandie Horse Show will host 3 levels of international competition: CSI 3*, 2* and 1*.
